Charles E. Du Bois Archives Patrick McGrew Memorial Research Grant
On September 9, 2025, the Du Bois papers were transferred from the Du Bois family’s storage location to the Palm Springs Art Museum. PSAM archivist Frank Lopez was on-site to take possession of the papers.
On June 15, 2025, PSPF sent a grant letter to Ms. Christine Vendredi (Interim Chief Executive Officer PSAM) outlining the various conditions of the $20,000 grant. To read the grant letter click here.
On June 2, 2025, the PSPF board of directors unanimously voted to fund a $20,000 grant to accession the papers of architect Charles E. Du Bois to the Palm Springs Art Museum (PSAM). The PSPF grant intends to, (1) facilitate the transfer of the papers from the Du Bois family’s storage location to the PSAM, (2) purchase archival supplies, (3) engage PSAM staff support to process, inventory, and catalog the papers, and (4) have the PSAM digitize the papers. This is the sixth Patrick McGrew Memorial Research grant awarded by PSPF.
In early April of 2025, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation (PSPF) board member Steve Treinen and PSPF member Ryan Harris met with the family of architect Charles E. Du Bois in Grass Valley, California, to survey the professional papers in the family’s possession. Happily, their examination determined that the papers were in very good physical condition and were being well-cared for by the family. Treinen presented Du Bois family members with a copy of PSPF’s award-winning book, Canyon Country Club: The History and Design of Palm Springs’ Garden of Eden. The book is notable as it represents the first scholarly mention of the role Du Bois played in Palm Springs’ “built environment.” More importantly, Treinen discussed with the family various ways that the Du Bois papers could be preserved with the ultimate aim of making them available to future generations of architectural historians.
